The Akron region has the dubious distinction of having the fourth most evictions per capita in the country. Akron City Court and city officials are working together to find out what is causing so many evictions and find solutions to bring the number down. ODR has allowed for an open dialogue to keep tenants in their homes and provided financial assistance from Summit County Cares – a rental, mortgage, and utility assistance program. “The Online Dispute Resolution Platform works really well,” Judge Cable said. “But you know, as with everything at the end of the day, it’s hard to find volunteers, so we need paid staff who are willing to stay with us. And their main focus is housing. So we want to have some judges and want to increase the number of mediators. And I think in my mind the judges will be working full time to decide these cases, so that people can have access to the courts in a more timely manner. “And then there is also the peke component social work. We need someone who can help people moving from their homes to other homes and help them find something they can afford, and hopefully in a similar environment so that there isn’t a major adjustment for them, or so that their kids don’t have to. change schools.” The housing program will offer resources to assist landlords and tenants with the aim of avoiding evictions and obtaining money from landlords that is owed to them from past due rents. Court Administrator Montrella Jackson said the high number of evictions in Akron affected more than just individual landlords and tenants. “It’s become a community issue,” Jackson said. “There is a greater cost to society as a whole.” Akron City Court Judge Nicole Walker will deal with the criminal aspects of the new housing program to address housing code violations. “It turned out to be a great need,” said Judge Walker. “Even though we only actively demand maybe 20 or 30 of these a month, they have a stash of over 1,900 open files. This is a really big save. Part of the reason they haven’t been able to move is that the housing division doesn’t have a workforce. “But with this proposal, what we hope is that we can work with them, and get into a program where they will refer cases before they bring criminal charges against me on the criminal docket, and we will try to work to get a fix. done. We would like to hire a social worker/housing specialist to help with this issue. And that person will also help with the criminal file, because we want that person to help us develop a compliance plan and find programs and resources that can help defendants get their property back into compliance. It doesn’t cost much upfront to get the (housing) files together, it’s just being able to identify those resources and start helping people to make improvements and stick with them.” A meeting has taken place between Akron City Court judges, Akron City Council and Akron City to discuss how the program can be funded. “This is a great opportunity for tenants and landlords to resolve their issues on a positive note. Proper communication and legal representation, on both sides of the equation, are key to success and reducing evictions in our community,” said Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan. Judge Cable said he was excited to get the program up and running. “There is definitely a community need,” he said. “And I hope we get to something sooner rather than later.”
