Law Firm Hiring and Expansion
Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP has appointed two new attorneys to lead its growing public sector practice: partner Andy Mayts will serve as group chairman and partner Patrick Duggan will serve as co-chairman. Mr. Matts focuses his practice on banking, finance and construction litigation. Read also : CLOC Announces Mike Haven as New President. He handles complex civil litigation for many clients, including large corporations, national banks and other financial institutions. Mr. Duggan practices labor law and litigation in complex public sector and corporate workplace disputes, with a particular focus on the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act and other important statutes.

Stephanie J. Blumstein is with the law firm of A.Y. Strauss as a partner in the Franchise practice group. Ms. Blumstein has extensive experience in franchise litigation, including matters relating to breach of contract, trademark infringement, fraud, commercial competition and lease negotiations. She has assisted both prospective franchisees and experienced franchisees on all types of issues. Ms. Blumstein was also recognized in the 2023 edition of The Best Lawyers in America.

Michael Best added Dan Forest, former Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina, to the company’s Raleigh office as a Senior Advisor. Mr. Forest joins the Government Relations practice, assisting Michael Best Strategies in building a strong bipartisan team of professionals focused on serving public affairs and government relations clients. In his previous role as Lieutenant Governor, Mr. Forest also served as President of the North Carolina State Senate, Chair of the Energy Policy Council, and Chair of the Digital Technology Committee as a member of the State Board of Education.

BakerHostetler added Lisa Houssiere as a member of the firm’s litigation practice group and energy industry team in their Houston office. Ms. Houssiere has extensive experience in international litigation and investigations, particularly in the energy sector, and has worked on several high-profile Foreign Corrupt Practices Act cases and advised clients served by the U.S. Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Department of Justice and the US Federal Criminal Investigations are investigating Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the European Commission.

Ray Whitman, Chair of BakerHostetler’s National Litigation Practice Group, commented on Ms. Housssiere’s addition to the firm. “Her range of litigation, including complex energy, antitrust and intellectual property matters, brings additional depth to our internationally recognized litigation practice.”
Venable LLP added partner John Roberts (Chicago) and partner Karen Firstenberg (Los Angeles) to its product liability and mass torts teams in Chicago and Los Angeles. Steve Adamczyk, a partner at Varnum LLP, has been named to the 2022 Gulfshore Business 40 Under 40. Paula Cozzi Goedert, a senior nonprofit attorney at Barnes and Thornburg specializing in tax, compliance and strategy, was named to Crain’s Chicago Business 2022 list of Notable Women in Law. Crain’s annual list exemplifies the power of women in law by showcasing leaders with compelling professional stories.
Ms. Goedert is Chair of Barnes and Thornburg’s Associations and Foundations Group and has served over 300 clients including the National PTA, the American College of Surgeons, the American Library Association and the Bank Administration Institute. Goedert’s expertise has been invaluable during the COVID-19 crisis as she guided her clients through challenges such as staff furloughs, foundation searches and insurance claims.

Former White House Administrator Sharon McGowan brings her antidiscrimination background to her new role as a partner at nationally recognized civil rights law firm Katz Banks Kumin. Ms. McGowan previously served as chief strategy officer and legal director for the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, counsel for the ACLU’s LGBT and AIDS projects, and lead counsel for the landmark anti-discrimination case Schroer v. Billington in the workplace. During the Obama administration, Ms. McGowan worked as Assistant Secretary of Civil Rights at the US Department of Justice and acting General Counsel and Assistant General Counsel for Policy at the US Department of Human Resources to end various forms of discrimination.
