Known for her outstanding work ethic and love of family, Marlene Robinson has diligently carried out her job as a data entry clerk at Akron Legal News for over 25 years, only leaving the position when health compelled her to, said her eldest grandson, Nick Robinson. “My grandmother loved the work,” Nick said. “She was an independent, hard working woman. She cherished her years at Akron Legal News.” On May 26, the lifelong Kenmore resident died at home surrounded by her family. She was 84. “My grandmother was very involved in her grandchildren’s lives,” Nick said. “Growing up, I would take her to my cousins’ baseball, basketball, and softball games every weekend. “Lately we’ve been spending time watching movies, gardening, going out to dinner and looking at family albums,” Nick said. “She gave me a thorough overview of our family history.” Jason Croston, general manager of Akron Legal News, said Robinson was a “great co-worker, friend and most importantly human being.” The two occasionally shared office space. “I loved hearing her stories about her family, fast pitch softball and tennis. She was very proud of her whole family, especially her grandchildren. She used to glow when she spoke about her achievements in sports and in life. “I have been blessed to know and work with her for over 18 years,” Croston said. “She was a very loyal employee who was always willing to help in any way. She was one of a kind and will be greatly missed by all of us here at Akron Legal News.” Born in Akron on December 1, 1937, she was the eldest of five children of Nicholas and Mary Hrubovcak. Robinson grew up in Akron’s Kenmore neighborhood. She graduated from Kenmore High School in 1955, w o she was a cheerleader. In August 1959 she married Robby Robinson Sr. They had four boys Nick. In fact, her husband R Obby Robinson Sr. was a noted fast pitch softball player inducted into the Summit County Softball Hall of Fame. “When she turned 81, we went to Memphis because I ran the St. Jude Memphis Marathon. We stayed with my aunt and uncle and celebrated their birthday after the race.” From 1955 to 1962, Robinson was a secretary at The Goodyear Tire & rubber company. She then worked part-time for the Board of Education in Akron, processing lunch menus and doing secretarial duties; Ross Inc. “Marlene was a liaison between the newspaper and the courts,” said Bob Heffern, vice president and editor of Akron Legal News. “She was our eyes and ears and our public relations person in court. “Her job was to gather information about new cases and legal notices from the municipal and general appeals courts in Summit County. She also collected details about sheriff sales and foreclosures for the newspaper. She had a stint in the Summit County Clerk’s Office and an office at Legal News. “Sometimes she would type the information in at the courthouse and sometimes she would bring it back here. “She loved her job and interacting with the court clerks, and they felt the same about her,” Heffern said. “Marlene was very instrumental in keeping legal notices in Akron Legal News. “She was a great collaborator and friend,” Heffern said. “Even after her health issues forced her to quit the job at the end of 2019, we kept her office open in case she wanted to return. She always had a job with us.” “Marlene was a beautiful person,” said Misty Zenner, Akron’s Legal Notice Specialist legal news “She always made me smile when she came into the office.” Kimberly Pierson, executive director of the Daily Legal News in Youngstown, worked with Robinson for many years, according to rs. “When I started my job in 1993, I was in Akron,” Pierson said. “Marlene was always energetic, cheerful and friendly. She loved talking about her family. She loved tennis and I loved listening to her stories about her tennis tournaments. “Over the past decade, the stories have changed to those of her grandchildren who she adored,” Pierson said. “She couldn’t wait to brag about her accomplishments, whether it was in school or in sports.” Susan Gutierrez, editor of Akron Legal News, said Robinson’s office is right next to her desk, so they talked for many years. “She always left the radio on and often turned it up louder when Lady Gaga sang. She was a huge fan. “When there’s no music playing, you can be sure there was a tennis tournament going on,” Gutierrez said. “She was a great tennis player in her time and a devoted tennis enthusiast. I miss her cheerful nature and her bright smile very much. She always lightened the mood when she walked in.” Robinson’s longtime friend Darlene Grimsley said she cared about everyone around her and was “kind” to everyone she met. “I met Marlene for the first time when I was about 17. ‘ Grimsley said. “I used to babysit her boys. She attended my wedding in 1981 and we’ve been friends ever since. “Marlene was very caring for her family,” Grimsley said. “She has never missed a sporting event attended by her husband, children or grandchildren. “Marlene loved her job at Akron Legal News,” said Grimsley, a paraprofessional at Nolley Elementary School in New Franklin. “She even tried to encourage me to work with her, but I already had a job in the school system. Marlene was the kind of person who put 100% into everything she was involved with. “She’s been very supportive of her family and friends,” Grimsley said. “And once she loved you, she loved you for life.” Robinson was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Akron on June 2. She is survived by her sons Robby (Chris) Robinson, Scott (Carrie) Robinson, Neil Robinson and Rick ( Jennifer) Robinson; her sister Carol (Tom) Duggan; grandchildren Nicole, Nicholas, Brooke, Robby, Nathan, Nolan, Avery, Noah, Owen and Drew; great-grandchildren Dominick and many nieces and nephews. Robinson’s husband Robby, parents Nicholas and Mary Hrubovcak and brothers Richard, Tom and George Hrubovcak all preceded her in death.
