Donald Trump’s legal team was in discussions with the Department of Justice in early June about the records stored at the former president’s Mar-a-Largo home, which FBI agents searched on Monday, one of his lawyers confirmed to NBC News.
Trump’s attorney, Christina Bobb, said on Tuesday that the FBI removed about a dozen boxes from the basement storage area and that a search warrant executed by agents indicated that they were investigating violations of the Presidential Records Act.
By his account, multiple sources have now confirmed to NBC News that the unprecedented search was linked to classified material.
The Washington Post first reported the news from Bobb, who said he was present at Monday’s search, while CNN previously reported on the spring meeting.
According to Bobb, Trump’s lawyers earlier this year rummaged through a dozen boxes of items in the storage facility, looking for the president’s documents, and turned over “a few pages” that might meet the description.
Bobb said he and Trump lawyer Evan Corcoran met later with a Justice Department official whose name he cannot recall. Trump appeared at the beginning of the meeting, in June, and greeted investigators, Bobb said, adding that the former president was not interviewed. Federal officials then looked into the archives, Bobb added.
Corcoran did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Justice Department has declined to comment on the FBI’s search of Trump’s home.
Bobb told NBC News that Justice Department officials said they don’t believe the warehouse that houses the documents is properly protected. He said Trump officials added a lock on the property and that FBI agents broke the lock when they searched the building on Monday.
Bobb added that he did not know what prompted the Justice Department to expand its investigation into the court-ordered search.
A source close to Trump who is familiar with the investigation said there are no plans to release a copy of the warrant. Dawn added that Trump showed the Justice Department officials the warehouse during the spring meeting, which was said to have taken place on June 3.
In a lengthy email provided by his Save America political committee, Trump said his home was “currently under siege, ransacked, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents” who “intruded on my property.”
Mr. Trump this year had to return 15 boxes of documents that the National Archives and Records Administration said were improperly taken from the White House.
The National Archives later asked the Department of Justice to investigate whether Trump’s handling of White House records violated state law.
Trump’s spokesman, Taylor Budowich, blasted the FBI’s search, calling it “braze” and “totally inappropriate.”
“President Trump and his administration have spent a long time communicating and cooperating with the relevant agencies — something common to all of them,” Budowich said in a statement on Tuesday.
